Randy Strand had never heard of Adrian, Minnesota, but the school district had an opening for an elementary teacher, so when he received a call for an interview he said, “sure,” and got out a map.
The rest, as they say, is history.
Strand grew up in Tracy, Minnesota, one of eight children (four boys, four girls) born to Donald “Bud” and Shirley (Lussenhop) Strand. He was active in football, basketball and baseball in high school, and he credits his teachers and coaches for being good role models, so much so, that Strand knew he wanted to be a coach himself one day.
After graduating from Tracy High School, Strand headed to Moorehead State University. It was there that his educational plans took an odd turn: “I planned on majoring in Phy Ed and Health,” he explains, “but my advisor put me in the elementary education program of study. It wasn’t my plan but I thought, let’s try it.” Strand also played football in college.
