The 29th annual Avera Race Against Breast Cancer was held on Saturday, May 13th. The Klein’s “Treasured Chests” team was led by team captain, Jessica (Loosbrock) Fedt. This family based team walked in memory of Janet Klein, who lost her battle to breast cancer in 1987. The Auxiliary, American Legion, and Sons of the American Legion (SAL) had another well-planned program, which included several songs and patriotic readings and prayers led by Kathy Knips. Mark Loosbrock sang “”Memorial Hallelujah”, which was very moving. Rose Vargas and her grandson, Owen played a duet on the piano. Gene Metz and Avis Stoffel read a long list of deceased veterans from our area and gave special recognition to the recently deceased veterans, namely: Milton Hebig, Cyril Henning & Marvin Lorang. Michele Wieneke quietly accompanied them on the piano. Darwin Veld announced the names of the scholarship recipients: Amber Preuss (daughter of Tom & Christine of Adrian), Katie Wieneke (daughter of Steve & Laurie of Lismore), Morgan LeBrun (daughter of Bill & Patty of Reading) and Kyla Fuerstenberg (daughter of Gary & Karen of Wilmont). The American Legion Post #636, S.A.L., Auxiliary, Buck & Rita Krogman family, Earl & Joyce Erdman family, and the Clair & Dorothy Springman family fund those scholarships. Frank Kemper, President of the SAL, presented a check to the Legion for $4000. Ray Reker was recognized for being a 70-year member of the Legion.
