The Lismore Legion Hall was “bursting at the seams” again when local folks, out-of-towners, and many former residents of Lismore gathered on Memorial Day to remember those who have died for our freedom. The Auxiliary, American Legion, and Sons of the American Legion (SAL) had a well-planned program, which included several songs and patriotic readings and prayers led by Roxanne Kemper. Mark Loosbrock did his rendition of “Memorial Day Hallelujah”. Brent Feikema and Ellen read a long list of deceased veterans from our area and gave special recognition to the recently deceased veterans, namely: Raymond Loonan, Baylon Loosbrock and Ray LeBrun. Michele Wieneke quietly accompanied them on the piano. A special treat this year was the “signing” of the National Anthem by Jenna Vis of Brandon, SD (daughter of Janelle & Scott Vis and granddaughter of Tom & Mary Krogman). Commander Darwin Veld announced the names of the scholarship recipients: Alexia Kemper (daughter of Chris and Mindy of Lismore), Sydney Knips (daughter of Rick and Kerri of Lismore), Noah Roerig (son of Todd and Susan of Sioux City, IA), and Mitchell Veld (son of Troy and Cindy of Lismore). The American Legion Post #636, S.A.L., Auxiliary, Buck and Rita Krogman family, Earl and Joyce Erdman family, and the Clair and Dorothy Springman family fund those scholarships. Frank Kemper, President of the S.A.L. (Sons of the American Legion), presented a check to the Legion for $3,000. Members and guests were unable to proceed to the three cemeteries, so a twenty one-gun salute was given and Taps were played outside the Legion Hall. A potluck dinner was served and it was a wonderful day to remember and honor those who died for our freedoms.
