Every few weeks, I have a little patron come in with the few coins she has earned during that time, and she donates them to the Adrian Branch Library Renovation Fund. She gives me a big smile and says, “more for the library!”
There is a young man who comes to the library; instead of going on to college, he is working full time, saving his money for future education. He dropped a $20 bill in our donation bucket recently. I know he is saving every penny for college, and I asked, “are you sure?” He looked surprised and said, “of course!”
The members of the Grand Prairie Rockets 4H group voted to donate $300 to the Library fundraiser.
The students of AHS National Honor Society sold “Dragon” sunglasses during homecoming week and gave the Library $500 from the profits of those sales.
The young people of the area have been helping monetarily, as well as through volunteer work in the library by packaging and transporting books (and there will be more of that soon), and by constantly asking us “how can we help?”
I have been humbled by the show of support by the young people of our communities and surrounding rural area. I am not surprised, however, to find that our young people are civic minded, and want to give of their time and resources to help our library during this time of fundraising and renovation.
So, while this week is going to be full of a lot of talk about elections and laws, I would like us to focus on what great young people we have in this area.
Our area kids are wonderful – I’d vote for them any day!
