Leonard Frank Hieronimus, age 82, of Wilmont died Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at the Sandford USD Medical Center. He was born on July 22, 1934, to Frank and Carrie (Boots) Hieronimus, in Nobles County. He attended rural public school in Larkin Township. Leonard worked on the farm until December 1952, when he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He received an honorable discharge in October of 1956. He worked as a gravel hauler for two years.

Leonard married Lyla Jean Johnson on October 1, 1958, at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, Iowa. They began farming north of Adrian. After three years, they moved to Alvord, IA and farmed there for nine years. In 1971, they purchased their farm east of Wilmont and continued to live on the farm with the help of their two boys.

He enjoyed farming, bowling, socializing at the Wilmont Gas Station and the Wilmont Elevator. Leonard was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, in Rushmore, as an usher, member of the council, and all around helper. He was a member of the Wilmont Family Recreation Center Board for many years.

Leonard is survived by his wife, Lyla Hieronimus, Wilmont; three children, Mark Hieronimus, Wilmont; Keith (Jackie) Hieronimus, Worthington; and Kathy (Steve) Dockham, Alexandria; five grandchildren, Blair Hieronimus, Farmington; Alex Dockham, Alexandria; Spencer and Travis Dockham, Alexandria; Sydney Hieronimus, Worthington; one great-grandchild, Destiney Rose Richards, Farmington; brothers, Wayne (Jeanette) Hieronimus, Adrian; Frank Jr. “Butch” (Jeanne) Hieronimus, Adrian; David (Marlene) Hieronimus, Adrian; LeRoy (Gail) Hieronimus, Fergus Falls; Gary (Linda) Hieronimus, Ellsworth; sisters, Louise O’Neil, Worthington; Carol Kern, Adrian; Barbara (Bill) Parsons, Spokane, WA; Judy (Leon) Schaffer, Marshall; sister-in-law, Donna Hieronimus, Rushmore; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edward and Roger Hieronimus; sister, Evelyn Brace; brothers-in-law, Leonard Brace, Daryl O’Neil, Donald Kern and Robert Thomas; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Hieronimus.

Visitation will be from 4-7 pm Thursday at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington; and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Funeral will be 2 pm Friday at St. John Lutheran Church, in Rushmore, officiated by Pastor David McDonald. Burial with full military honors provided by the Wilmont VFW will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Rushmore.
