Funeral services for Lena Wiertzema, age 95, of Ellsworth, MN, were held on July 6, 2020, at the Zion Presbyterian Church, in Ellsworth, officiated by Pastor Galen Smith. Burial was in the Grand Prairie Cemetery, in Ellsworth. Lena died Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at the Sanford Luverne Medical Center, in Luverne, MN. She was born September 30, 1924, at home in rural Ellsworth, to Hilko and Anna DeBoer. She attended school in Ellsworth.
Lena married Herman Wiertzema on December 6, 1944, in Rushmore, MN. After their marriage, the couple farmed near Little Rock, IA. In 1950, they had their only son, David. They moved to the farm two miles east of Ellsworth in 1963. They retired and moved into Ellsworth in 1998.
She was a proud lifelong member of the Zion Presbyterian Church, in Ellsworth; and the Presbyterian Women. She enjoyed her flowers, watching the Minnesota Twins, bird watching, bowling, cooking, baking and she especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Lena is survived by her daughter-in-law, Jerre Wiertzema, Adrian, MN; three grandchildren, Brian (Mandy) Wiertzema, rural Ellsworth; Carolyn (Jason) Krapfl, Ft. Atkinson, WI; and Jill (Chris) Wolf, Adrian, MN; eight great-grandchildren, Olivia, Daniel and Emily Krapfl; Quentin, Anastasia, Caleb and Cyrus Wolf; and Clara Wiertzema; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman on September 8, 2008, her parents; son, Dave Wiertzema on January 26, 2018; a brother, Harm DeBoer; and two sisters, Fannie Mulder and Jennie Janssen.
