Lady Dragons record breaking season comes to an end

The Lady Dragons continued their winning ways last Tuesday with win over Tracy Milroy-Balaton in the 3A Subsection semifinals earning a trip to the Subsection finals, a first in Dragon volleyball history.

After shaking off a case of the nerves in the first set the Dragons settled in for a thrilling four set win 25-22, 25-17, 17-25 and 25-12.  Offensively and Defensively the Dragons frustrated the Panthers with an impressive display of digging and hitting with several long rallies by these two strong teams.

Leading the Dragons offensively was Kasie Tweet with 38 set assists and getting her 1,000 set assist of her career. Miah Kunkel had 19 kills, Bailey Lonneman 9 kills, Avery Balster 5 kills, Marisa Lehnhoff 4 kills and Shawna Rogers with 3 kills.  Defensively Avery Balster led with 22 digs, Miah Kunkel, 17 digs, Mayssa Tweet 16 digs, Shawna Rogers 8 digs and Bailey Lonneman 6 digs.  Avery Balster rejected Panther spikes with 4 blocks and Shawna Roger put up 3 blocks.  Strong serving was a key weapon for the Dragon win with Kasie Tweet serving 16 for 16 with 3 aces, Shawna Rogers 16 for 17, Miah Kunkel 15 for 15, Mayssa Tweet and Marisa Lehnhoff both went 11 for 12 from the line and Briana Reckamp was 100% serving from the line.

The Dragons earned a trip to the Subsection finals to take on the Red Rock Central Falcons.

The Dragons took on the Falcons from Red Rock Central in the Subsection final in Marshall on Thursday.  The Dragons and the Falcons were co-champions of the Red Rock Conference.  The Dragons would again prove they were the dark horse and the team to watch as they jumped out to a quick start on all games and took the Falcons out in four games 25-21, 25-21, 14-25 and 25-23 earning the Lady Dragons their first ever Subsection Championship.

Kasie Tweet again led the Dragons offensively with 36 set assists.  Marisa Lehnhoff led the Dragons in kills with 13 followed by Miah Kunkel and Bailey Lonneman with 12 each.  Defensively Mayssa and Kasie Tweet came up with 21 digs each followed by Avery Balster with 19, Miah Kunkel 13, Bailey Lonneman 8, and Marisa Lehnhoff with 7.  Shawna Rogers put up 4 blocks for the Dragons.  Strong serving from the Dragons made the Falcons scramble on their passing several times.  Leading the Dragons at the service line were Mayssa Tweet, Shawna Rogers and Avery Balster who all served 100%.  Kasie Tweet also served a strong 27 for 29.

This win improved the Dragon season record to 27-3, a record for the Dragon books.  The Lady Dragons moved on to take on the Minneota Vikings in Section play.

Minneota 3

The Lady Dragons travelled back to Marshall on Saturday to take on the Minneota Vikings in Section play.  Although the Dragons left it all on the court battling the taller Vikings but they came up short to Minneota in 3 games., 16-25, 14-25,17-25.

The Lady Dragons never gave up the fight and continued to battle to the end with tough offensive and defensive play.   Leading the Dragons offensively were Miah Kunkel with 12 kills and Bailey Lonneman with 7 kills.  Kasie Tweet added 24 more set assists to her career.  Defensively Miah Kunkel led the Dragons with 15 digs followed by Mayssa and Kasie Tweet with 11 apiece.  The Dragons are known for their strong serving and tonight was no exception with Avery Balster, Mayssa Tweet  and Shawna Rogers going 100% from the line.

The Dragons set many team and individual records throughout the season, these will be announced at the upcoming volleyball banquet.  Congratulations ladies on a great season!
