Rain is still difficult to come by this August. The cracks in the ground have put small critters and children in peril. There is not a lot of hope in the next ten days. Labor Day ends the summer with the start of school. There will be plenty of good weather yet, but winter is coming.

A small tragedy happened by accident this past week that should not be a problem, but it is an annoyance that I will get over. The calamity was the loss of a coffee cup. Not just a coffee cup, but a coffee cup that stood the test of time. My cup was a mug. A little larger than a cup, the mug was a thicker ceramic model with a sturdy, solid base that stayed where you put it. The big handle was the most endearing part that you could get four fingers in it comfortably, It was a free cup advertising a company that has long been forgotten. It bounced when dropped and sturdily survived all accidents. The end came one morning while I was reading my notes of the calamity of a council meeting. I was on my third cup from a pot that was lovingly left for my enjoyment when the end came. I was sitting in my chair with my iPad, the cup was on a small round table that held my notes and other assorted junk that was lovingly mentioned I should sort out and get rid of, please. I moved some papers and the cup was to close to the edge. It would have survived but it struck the base of an old floor lamp. There will be other cups but not quite the same. After thirty-five years it was a part of life. Sure, there are other cups and one is at the office  and it is historically covered with a patina of many fills of tea. It was possible to have a cup of tea without the tea bag. But today, I mourn the loss of a great coffee cup. Yes, the cupboard is full of other cups, but not like my cup.

Enjoy the holiday weekend. If the Renaissance Festival is on your schedule, we have tickets. The state fair is going strong this week, it may be time for trip.
