Funeral services for Henrietta Van Hill, 99, of Rock Rapids, IA were held Monday, December 18, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley, IA with Rev. E.C. Adams officiating. Burial followed at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Henrietta, formerly of Alvord, Iowa died Thursday, December 14, 2017, at Lyon Specialty Care in Rock Rapids, IA.
Henrietta (Roskam) Van Hill, daughter of Anthony and Sophia (Rozeboom) Roskam, was born July 19, 1918, near Rock Rapids, IA. She attended country school through the eighth grade. Henrietta was united in marriage with Tony Van Hill on November 17, 1938, at the Peacock Farm near Larchwood, IA. Together the couple farmed near Larchwood until moving to a dairy farm near Alvord, IA in 1954. Henrietta also spent time serving lunch at the West Lyon School for 12 years. She spent 20 years as a foster grandparent volunteer.
Henrietta and Tony enjoyed camping and fishing at Silver Lake with their family. She was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation. She liked doing handiwork such as knitting, crocheting, and quilting. Henrietta also enjoyed baking, cooking and doing word search puzzles. She was always busy with her hands. Most of all Henrietta cherished family and was always concerned for all. She loved visiting with people. She had a strong will to live and everyone admired that in her.
Henrietta is survived by her 3 children, Gilbert (Marlene) Van Hill and Kenneth (LeNora “Bugs”) Van Hill, both of Alvord, IA; and Shirley (Dean) Domeyer of Ellsworth, MN; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; brother, Gerrit Roskam; 2 sisters, Sophia (John) Zomer and Hilda (Jake) Van Voorst; and 4 sisters-in-law, Bea Roskam, Harriet Roskam, Grace Van Hill, and Chris Kroon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Anthony and Sophia; husband, Tony; daughter-in-law, Jane Van Hill; son-in-law, Daryl Oltmans; grandson, Daryl Ray Oltmans; 7 siblings, Dick (Tillie) Roskam, Gertrude (Dick) Tietsma. Gertie Dumond, Elizabeth (John) Van Der Weide, Tony Roskam, Leonard Roskam, and Cornie (Muriel) Roskam; and sister-in-law, Emma Roskam.
