Harry Eugene Spidel ~ Mission, TX ~ Formerly of Lismore, MN

 

Harry Eugene Spidel passed away on January 9, 2018, in Mission, TX at the age of 93.  His funeral and burial will be at the St. Anthony Church and Cemetery in Lismore, MN at a later date.  Harry was born May 14, 1924, in Kansas City, KS, to Ralph and Marie Spidel.  He was baptized at the Presbyterian Church in Roseville, KS.  As a child, his family moved from Kansas City to Burlingame, KS where he attended country school, and graduated from Burlingame High School in 1943.  He was very active in all sports. Soon after high school, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, and served in the South Pacific Theatre in WWII, as a gunner’s mate with the US Navy.  While on a 10 day leave in 1944, he was married to Neola Markley.  He was discharged from the service in 1946.  Harry and Neola had 3 children, Marilynn (Sue), Michael, and Bruce.

Harry worked for the Neale Telephone Construction Company and later Henkel & McCoy Telephone Construction Company, working throughout the United States.  In 1963, he joined Central Telephone Company (now Frontier) in Farmington, MN as a line foreman.  He then transfered to Worthington, MN as an outside plant supervisor. He retired from Frontier in 1982.

In 1985, he married Sandy Krogman-Wieneke. They moved to Paris, TX for 6 years and then back to Round Lake, MN to operate the Hilltop Campground. Later they moved to Lismore, MN and spent the winters in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. In 2010 they moved permanently to Mission, TX.

Harry was a life member of  VFW Post 3958 in Worthington, MN and a member of the Lismore American Legion Post 636. He was active in many American Legion activities including the office of 2nd District Commander in 1984-85.

Harry is survived by his wife Sandy (Jeep), daughter Marilynn Sue (Salvador) Cortez of Clovis, NM; son Bruce (Lori) Spidel of Worthington, MN; Step daughter Gloria (Bill) Carlberg of Lismore, MN; Step son Curt (Darla) Wieneke of Windom, MN; Step son Ron (Tina) Wieneke of Evans, CO; 5 grandchildren – Liza, Troy, Shad, Jason, Chris; 6 great grandchildren, 9 step grandchildren – Brian, Valarie, Blaine, Faith, Marie, Joe, Bailey, Sidney, Delaney and 9 step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, former wife Neola, son Michael, and grandson Shad Anderson.
