Four Adrian Dragon golfers played in the Class A Minnesota State Golf Tournament held at the Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, MN on June 11th and 12th. The Dragons played an 18 hole practice round on Monday, followed by the 36 hole event on Tuesday and Wednesday. The course was in great condition and the weather conditions were favorable for the 2-day tournament.
All 4 of the Adrian linksters were playing in their first state golf tournament and represented Adrian very well. Those playing for the Dragons were Madelyn Odell, Gracia Elias, Josi Altman, and Brock Henning.
Senior, Madelyn Odell, carded a 93 on Day 1 for a great start to the tournament. She followed it up with a 103 on Day 2 for a 36 hole total of 196. Her 196 placed Madelyn in a tie for 38th, which was in the top half of the 86 person field. This was a great finish to Madelyn’s high school career. Gracia Elias shot a 104 on the 1st day of the tourney and dropped 6 shots off that total for a 98 on Day 2. Gracia’s 36 hole total of 202 put the sophomore in a tie for 50th place in the field. Freshman, Josi Altman, battled a bit of the first round jitters and shot an uncharacteristic round of 119. However, Josi stormed back with a great day on Day 2 and fired a 101, an 18 stroke improvement over her Day 1 total. Josi finished in a tie for 73rd place. Gracia and Josi gained valuable state tournament experience and will be key players on next season’s squad.
Eighth grader, Brock Henning, was the leading player on the 2019 boys team and played very well in his initial state tournament. Brock played very steady golf in both rounds of the tourney. He played bogey golf on Day 1 and finished with a round of 90. His Day 2 score of 92 gave Brock a total of 182 and a final placing of 55th in an 88 man field. Brock’s ability to play even-keeled and accept the good shots with the occasional bad shot is an important aspect of the game that all young golfers need to develop.
Madelyn Odell was honored at the state tournament banquet by being named as an Academic All-State honoree. This award is given to seniors who have a grade point average of 3.75 or higher over the course of their high school years. Congratulations to Madelyn on this great achievement.
The Adrian Dragon fans once again turned out in great numbers to support our Dragon golfers at the state tournament. The players and coaching staff appreciate all of the support given throughout the 2019 golf season.
