In a tough battle from start till finish, the Dragon girls fell to the 2AA Windom Eagles by only eight points 68-60 on Monday, January 16th in their first home game in the Adrian gym.
The girls got in the groove of the game right away when Junior, Jayden Zebe hit a 3 right off the tip to start the game. Dragons soon found out though, that Windom’s game plan was to get the ball to one of their two 6’ posts, which was a huge mismatch for the Dragons defensively. That didn’t stop 5’7” Kallie Chapa. She played outstanding defense for the Dragons and held 6’1” Autumn Hauge, to only four points for the night.
Going into halftime the A-E girls were down by 12 and knew they had some picking up to do. In the first half, Windom’s Kaitlee Huska had 14 points. Moriah Bullerman knew she had some work to do defensively to stop her, and she did just that. Moriah, along with the help of her team, held Huska to zero points in the second half. Unfortunately, the Dragons were unable to contain Windom’s post, Delaney Smith, who had 25 for the night.
The Dragon girls both outscored and out-rebounded (41 to 28) the Eagles in the second half. The Dragons finished the game with 18 assists and they shot 88% from the free throw line.
Bailey Lonneman was lights out for the Dragons in the first half, scoring 16 of her 20 points. Lonneman ended the night shooting 60% from the field, grabbing 12 rebounds, and dishing out 3 assists.
The Lady Dragons gave it all they had and in the end fell a few buckets short. Overall the coaches were extremely impressed with their performance. The team is slowly but surely coming together. The Dragons took on the HLO-F Coyotes at home in Ellsworth on Friday, December 20th before heading into the Christmas break.
