Orla G. Kindred 65, of Murdock, MN died on Monday October 22, 2012 at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center. A funeral was held Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the Kerkhoven Evangelical Free Church. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Orla Garnet Kindred was born on May 27, 1947, at Sibley, IA, the daughter of John and Jennie (DeJong) Engelkes. Their family moved to the New London Minnesota area where Orla graduated from the New London Spicer High School in 1965.
Orla served in the U.S. Navy from September 10, 1965 until January 23, 1969, as a Dental Technician stationed at the Naval Station Treasure Island, San Francisco, CA. Following her discharge Orla attended Willmar Community College and graduated with an associate degree in accounting. She worked at the Holiday Station in Benson, Future Products and the Presbyterian Family Foundation. She also was custodian at the Benson High School, worked at Willmar Poultry and was an Independent Contractor delivering papers at the West Central Tribune. In September 1998, Orla went to work at the Heartland Girls Ranch where she held various positions including an overnight counselor, shift supervisor and office manager. She also taught many of the girls to crochet and sew. She retired in june 2011, due to her health. Orla fought cancer for 24 years.
Orla was baptized as an adult and was a member of the Kerkhoven Evangelical Free Church at the time of her death. She had a passion for missions and served on the mission committee at church.
Her family recalls Orla’s hobbies of fishing, reading and crocheting. She entered in to many debates on intellectual topics with her children. Orla loved to tease her granddaughter Cory and loved to bake cookies with her and sharing time with her step-grandchildren.
Surviving are her children, Nanette Torkelson (special friend Vince Harguth), Murdock and John Kindred, Grove City; her mother, Jennie Englelkes, Benson, granddaughter Cory Kindred and step-grandchildren, Katie Lynn, Jessica and Andrew Harguth. Also surviving are her siblings, Jerry (Diane) Engelkes, New London, Rodney (Julie) Engelkes, Belgrade, Wilma (Dwaine) Kruse, Adrian and brother-in-law, Steven Sietsema, Montevideo and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, daughter, Kristine on July 14, 1987, and sister Elaine Sietsema.
