A Mass of Christian burial for Darwin F. Veld, age 72, of Lismore, MN was held September 14, 2020, at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Father Richard Colletti officiating. Darwin died Thursday, September 10, 2020, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. He was born on January 8, 1948 in Slayton, MN to Jake and Elizabeth (Douma) Veld. Darwin graduated high school in 1966 from Chandler MN. He attended Votech school in Jackson, MN for 1 year for carpentry. He enlisted in the Navy Seabees in 1968-1969 and served in VietNam from 1969-1970.
On August 29, 1970, Darwin married Lois Liepold in Heron Lake, MN. Darwin and Lois then moved to Canby, MN for him to complete 2 years of college for drafting. They also lived in New Richland and LaCrescent, MN before moving to Lismore in 1975 where they purchased the lumberyard which they have owned and operated for 45 years. He always said he was never going to retire and even after the boys took over, he was there every day. He loved the lumber business.
Darwin was a member of the Lismore American Legion, president of the Lismore Coop Telephone board, past member of the Adrian School Board, member of the AMMI board, member of the SD Retail Lumberman’s Association and received the Lumberman of the Year Award in 2017 and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. Darwin loved his family and friends, especially all of his grandkids.
Darwin will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years Lois, Lismore, MN; his four sons, Troy (Cindy), Lismore, MN; Todd, Brandon, SD; Jason (Laurie), Brandon, SD and Jon (Tammy), Brandon, SD; 13 grandchildren, Marissa (Austin), Mitchell, Caitlyn, Jenika, Levi, Marshall, Cooper, Makayla, Madison, Mason, Kallie, Brayden and Logan. He is also survived by his brother Stan (Marjie) Veld; sisters Joyce DePauw, Marge (Gary) VandeVoort, Linda Blom Eiben (Jerry) and Ruth (Rod) Erdman; brother-in-laws Jim (Lynne) Liepold, Bob (Martha) Liepold, Ken (Jackie) Liepold and Gordy (Mary) Liepold and numerous nieces and nephews.
Darwin is preceded in death by grandson, Tyler in 2006; parents Jake and Elizabeth; father and mother-in-law, Leonard and Viola Liepold; brothers-in-law Albert DePauw and Al Blom; and nephew Robbie Erdman.
