The Canby Lancers came out on top in a game in which the Dragons led going into the fourth quarter. Canby would end up scoring at the beginning and very end of said quarter to earn the victory.
Adrian kicked off to start the game. A 29 yard pass paced the Lancer drive which ended in a touchdown on a fourth down run. The extra point was good, and before the Dragons possessed the ball they were down 7-0.
The Dragons were stuffed on a fourth and one from midfield on their first possession to turn the ball back over to the Lancers. Adrian then forced a turnover of their own on downs on Canby’s next possession, taking over at the Adrian 32 yard line. The Dragons gained five first downs on their next possession and would eventually score on a Ryan Wieneke one yard QB sneak. Wieneke hit Brendyn White on a 28 yard pass to set up the score. Dominic Caneles converted the PAT and the score was then tied at seven.
The Lancers answered the score quickly with a five play, 81 yard touchdown drive. The drive was aided by two Dragon penalties. The Lancers PAT was again good, making the score 14-7 Canby with 7:27 to play in the second quarter.
Adrian turned the ball over on downs following the Lancer score. However, the Dragon defense was able to hold the ball down on the Canby 24 yard line in the drive. The Dragon defense then forced a punt after three plays, getting the ball back on the Lancer 42 yard line with a little over four minutes to play in the half.
The Dragon offense would make the game closer going into half with a touchdown drive, scoring with just 13 seconds to play in the half. Brandon Schnoor scored the touchdown on a one yard run. Schnoor paced the drive with runs of 18 and 11 yards on the drive. The PAT failed, leaving the score 14-13 as the teams headed to half time.
The Dragons recieved the second half kickoff and promptly drove down the field to take the lead. The offense ran 11 plays on the drive that covered 63 yards. All 11 plays were runs, with the Nick Harder scoring the touchdown from two yards out. Schnoor ran in the two point conversion to give Adrian a 21-14 lead.
Canby again answered with a touchdown of their own on their very next possession. The PAT was no good, keeping the Dragons in front 21-20. Canby got the ball back on an Adrian interception. The pick was returned to midfield to give the Lancers good field position. The Lancers used the field position, along with a silly Adrian penalty to score and take the lead. The two point try failed and with 10:59 to play in the fourth quarter the score stood at 21-26 Canby.
The Dragons were unable to get anything going to answer the score on their next possession and were forced to punt after three plays. The defense stiffened and forced a turnover on downs to get the ball back. The offense then showed signs of life as Wieneke hit White on a 43 yard pass to get the ball down to Canby’s 30 yard line. However, a run of one yard was followed by three straight incompletions to give Canby the ball back.
The Dragon defense was unable to get a stop and get the offense back on the field. Runs of 26 and 18 yards proved to be back breakers on the drive. The drive finally ended on a eight yard fourth down run in which Canby scored with one second remaining in the game. The PAT was no good, leaving the score 32-21 Lancers.
Schnoor led the Dragon rushing attack with 18 carries, 99 yards and a touchdown. Harder rushed nine times for 21 yards and a score. Wieneke also carried nine times for 17 yards and a touchdown.
