Camryn Baumhoefner, a Nobles County 4-H member, had the opportunity to attend the inauguration of President Donald Trump. She was one of 45 Minnesota 4-H members who was selected to attend through the Minnesota 4-H Citizenship Washington Focus: Presidential Inauguration Program.
On Monday, January 16th, Baumhoefner traveled to Minneapolis to stay overnight for an early morning flight to Washington, D. C. The Minnesota 4-H members participated in a group event that evening. “We were up at 3:30 a.m. to get to the airport. Take off was supposed to be at 7:30 a.m., but there was ice on the place and they had to de-ice it. I had never flown before, but it was a pretty good flight,” Baumhoefner stated.
Upon arriving in Washington, D.C., the 4-H members boarded a charter bus and soon arrived at the 4-H National Convention Center. They were settled into their rooms at the Convention Center and then joined together for an evening meal.
“Throughout the week, there were many workshops planned for us that focused on the media’s role in informing the public about what is happening in the world,” Baumhoefner commented.
The Newseum was visited by the Minnesota 4-H members. Baumhoefner said that she definitely had a few favorite displays including the 9/11 Gallery, the FBI Gallery and the Boston Bomber Gallery. “At the Newseum, they told us that the media is the way in which people all over the world know what is happening. Without the media, we wouldn’t have knowledge of the historical events that take place,” Baumhoefner relayed. “I liked the 9/11 Gallery. There was a time line of the events as they happened. There was a photo of debris falling that was taken by a man who lost his life from that falling debris. To accompany that photo, there is a video with his wife talking about what happened.”
