A Mass of Christian Burial for Agnes Lucy Joens was held Saturday, August 3, 2019 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Wilmont, MN. She passed away July 30, 2019 at the Sanford Medical Center in Worthington, MN. Agnes was born on November 14, 1934 in Wilmont, MN to Edward and Lucy (Gaul) Balster. She attended OLGC School and then Worthington Jr. College where she received a degree in accounting. She went on to work as a bookkeeper for Swift & Co. Produce and Talbott Upholstery for 2 years.
On September 7, 1955 she married James S. Joens in Wilmont, MN. After her marriage, she moved to San Antonio, TX while her husband was in the US Air Force. In 1958, they returned to the family farm in rural Wilmont, MN where she resided until 2018. Due to medical issues, she moved to South Shore Care Center in Worthington in August of 2018 where she resided until her death. She was a member of OLGC Catholic Church where she served as CCW President, Area President, and Diocesan Community Affairs Chairman. She was also a 50+ member of the Catholic Daughters of America serving as Regent and District Deputy.
Agnes enjoyed working with children. She taught release time church school in Reading and Confirmation classes in Wilmont. She was a member of the Peer Listening Group and a Den Mother for the Boy Scouts of America. She also served on many various PTA and school advisory groups.
Agnes loved her family and the time she spent with them. She cherished the family get togethers, crocheting baby blankets, playing cards, and coloring with the great grandchildren.
Agnes is survived by her 10 children: Brenda Joens of Shawnee, KS; Patricia (Brian) Lenz of Wilmont, MN; Susan Dougherty of Denton, TX; James (Joan) Joens of Wilmont, MN; Steven (Tarri) Joens of Wilmont, MN; Teresa (Michael) Pautzke of Litchfield, MN; Jason (Patty) Joens of Hudson, FL; Sara Lee (Kevin) Wynia of Slayton, MN; Eric (Ali) Joens of Reading, MN and Joy Joens of Marshall, MN; 26 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; Sister-in-laws: Arlene Joens of Worthington, MN; Janice Hanson of Adrian, MN and JoAnn Johnson of Worthington, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband Jim, parents Ed and Lucy, parents-in-law Otto and Bernice Joens, and son-in-law Bill Dougherty.
