September 16 2019
Board Vice Chair Wolf called the regular meeting of the Adrian Board of Education to order at 6:00 P.M. on September 16, 2019. Members present: Bullerman, Kruger, Madison, Wolf and Wieneke. Also present were Superintendent Graff, Principal Koehne and Dean of Students Schettler and staff member B. Steven.
Board Members Lenz and Kunkel. were absent.
Motion by Bullerman to nominate Wieneke as board clerk, seconded by Kruger, motion carried.
Motion by Madison, seconded by Wieneke to approve the agenda by adding items F -Lease Funding for Boiler and Item G – Teachers Negotiations to the Superintendent’s report, motion carried.
Discussed the tax abatement request from L & M Kopplow for five years. Motion by Madison, seconded by Bullerman to approve request, motion carried.
Mr. Graff presented the building and grounds report:
Gave an update on the Elementary Boiler project with wrapping up the project next week.
Discussed sidewalk around the fence. Motion by Bullerman, seconded by Wieneke to hire Randy Graham to finish off the sidewalk to the end of the fence area, motion carried.
Motion by Kruger, seconded by Madison to approve the minutes from the August 19, 2019 meeting with corrections noted, motion carried.
Motion by Kruger, seconded by Wieneke to approve the claims and accounts for August 2019, motion carried.
The August 31, 2019 reports were reviewed. Motion by Madison seconded by Bullerman to approve the account balances, motion carried.
Mrs. Koehne and Mr. Schettler presented the Elementary Dean of Student’s Report, MS/HS Principal’s report and Activities Director’s Report.
Ms. Steven requested overnight and out of the country trip to Spain for students who are currently in or have completed Spanish II. Motion by Kruger, seconded by Madison to accept proposal, motion carried.
Mrs. Koehne requested to hire A. Dammann as a Middle School/ High School Paraprofessional at Lane 1, Step 1 of the Local Union 578 Agreement. Motion by Bullerman, seconded by Kruger to accept request to hire, motion carried.
Mrs. Koehne requested to have Thursday, October 17, as an early release date with Staff Development in the afternoon, motion by Bullerman, seconded by Madison to approve request, motion carried.
Mrs. Koehne and Mr. Schettler reviewed the enrollments as of September.
Mrs. Koehne explained an opportunity for the community and students to have a heart screening done at a cost of $85 per person for individuals between the ages of 14 and 34. Motion by Kruger, seconded by Bullerman to move forward with this, motion carried.
Mrs. Koehne presented a resolution to accept a donation from Sanford Health in the amount of $250 toward MS/HS Dragon Pride, motion by Bullerman, seconded by Wieneke to accept donation, motion carried.
Discussed the upcoming MREA convention on November 17 – 19 with five spots reserved.
Discussed Homecoming with a request to invite Ellsworth High School to the dance. Motion by Bullerman, seconded by Madison to invite grades 9-12 to the dance, motion carried.
Discussed referee pay for Wrestling. Motion by Wieneke, seconded by Kruger to increase the fees to $140 which includes travel expenses for a dual meet, motion carried.
Requested overnight travel for Wrestling on December 20 to Redwood Falls and on January 3rd to Montgomery, motion by Bullerman, seconded by Wieneke to accept request, motion carried.
Mr. Graff presented his Superintendent’s report:
Presented the proposed 2019 payable 2020 tax levy with a 3% reduction. This is due the expiring referendum. Motion by Madison, seconded by Bullerman to certify the maximum amount, motion carried.
Presented the K-12 Principal’s Agreement for 3 years with Mrs. Koehne, to include full family insurance coverage and HSA contributions. Motion by Bullerman, seconded by Kruger to accept agreement, motion carried.
Presented and explained the Seniority List in regards to the tier placement and requested approval, motion by Kruger, seconded by Madison to approve Seniority List, motion carried.
Presented the following teachers for tenure: A. Engelkes, G. Harner, I. Kruse, and P. Odens. Motion by Bullerman, seconded by Wieneke to grant tenure, motion carried.
Gave an update on the Referendum, announcing that he has been handing out information on the referendum and that an article will be in the Nobles County Review.
Presented information to finance the Elementary Boiler with Kinetic Leasing. Motion by Wieneke to lease for 7 years at 4.45% interest with installment payments at $44,507, seconded by Bullerman, motion carried.
Announced that the Adrian Education Association is requesting to begin contract negotiations for the 2019-2021 contract years.
Motion by Bullerman, seconded by Kruger to adjourn the September meeting of the Adrian Board of Education at 6:52 P.M., motion carried.
