Legal Notice
Due to the current federal and state emergency declarations and guidance about limiting person-to-person contact due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, by action of the school board of ISD 511, all future meetings of the Adrian Public Schools Board of Education will be conducted in accordance with Minnesota Statutes 13D.021—Meetings by Teleconference or Other Electronic Means – until further notice.
Due to the health pandemic, the school board has determined that it is not feasible for at least one board member, the superintendent, or the school district’s legal counsel to be physically present at the regular meeting location. It is also not feasible for the public to attend at the regular meeting location due to the health pandemic.

Board Chair Wolf called the regular meeting of the Adrian Board of Education to order at 6:00 P.M. on April 20, 2020. Members present: Kruger, Kunkel, Lenz, Madison, Wieneke and Wolf. Also present were Superintendent Graff, Principal Koehne, Dean of Students Schettler, staff members J. Kruger, V. VanderWal, J. Henning and D. Luethje, Nobles County Review Representative Deb Kroon, and Minnesota School Board Association Representative Gary Lee.
Board Member Bullerman was absent.
Board Chair started the meeting by reading the declaration regarding limiting person-to-person contact due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Motion by Madison, seconded by Kunkel to amend the agenda by moving up item 6B under the Superintendent’s report to the beginning of the meeting, following a roll call vote of members, motion carried.
Mr. Graff presented and reviewed the preliminary 2020-21 budget assumptions.
Mrs. VanderWal presented a proposal to replace out dated band instruments that can no longer be repaired. Motion by Madison, seconded by Kruger to table this request until the May meeting and requested Mrs. VanderWal to obtain an additional quote, following a roll call vote of members, motion carried.
Mr. Graff presented the building and grounds report.
Gave an update on the high school gym sanding and resurfacing
Presented a quote from Johnson Controls to replace the core filters on the high school air handler. It is recommended to replace after 5K hours or yearly. The filters have never been replaced or cleaned. Motion by Lenz, seconded by Kunkel to replace at a cost of $20,000, following a roll call vote of members, motion carried.
Reviewed the Consent Agenda items consisting of the minutes of the March 16, March 18, and April 1, 2020 board meetings, the Claims and Accounts for March 2020, and the March 31, 2020 Reports, Dean of Student’s Agreement, Offer of Employment, and Non Renewal of a Probationary Teacher. Motion by Madison, seconded by Wieneke to approve the consent agenda items, all members voted in favor, motion carried.
Mrs. Koehne, Mr. Schettler and Mr. Kruger presented the Elementary Dean of Student’s Report, MS/HS Principal’s report and Activities Director’s report
Mrs. Koehne and Mr. Schettler gave an update on distance learning, food service and child-care.
Mr. Dean Luethje reviewed the technology requests and needs for the upcoming year.
Mrs. Koehne has received a volunteer request to clean up and replace shrubs in the Memorial Garden. The Board gave consent to proceed.
Mrs. Koehne presented options for Graduation, and Prom.
Mr. Schettler gave an update on Kindergarten Round Up and Pre School Registration which is being done by mail.
Mr. Kruger announced that the Minnesota State High School League is still planning a spring season,
Mr. Kruger addressed a concern for Spring Coaches pay, being this is part of their Notice of Assignments the coaches will be compensated.
Discussed paid spring sports activity fees. If the season is cancelled the money can be refunded to the school lunch account, applied to next sport season or refunded by check.
Mr. Graff presented the Superintendent’s report:
Presented a request to move $3,750 from Fund 1 to Fund 2 for the Food for Thought Program to pay past due lunch accounts. Motion by Kruger, seconded by Kunkel to transfer funds, following a roll call vote of members, motion carried.
Presented two quotes for the replacement of mats in the wrestling room. Due to lack of motion, discussion ceased.
Presented two paint quotes for painting the high school gymnasium, fitness center and east and west entrance/concessions areas. Due to lack of a motion, discussion ceased.
The District has received information that the Cox Family would like to establish a $500 scholarship in Landon Rogers name that is pursuing a degree in Agriculture. Motion by Kruger, seconded by Kunkel to accept this scholarship, following a roll call vote of members, motion carried.
Gary Lee, Minnesota School Board Association, reviewed the Superintendent search procedures, reviewed the candidates with the board members. Motion by Wieneke, seconded by Kunkel to select Candidates B, D, E, F, G for interviews, following a roll call vote of members, motion carried. Gary Lee then released the names of the candidates selected as follows:

Motion by Kunkel, seconded by Madison to adjourn the April meeting of the Adrian Board of Education at 8:35 P.M., following a roll call vote of members, motion carried.
