After a 1 ½ hour lightning delay, the Adrian Dragons used a punishing ground attack to down the Springfield Tigers 44 to 8. With the win the Dragons earned the right to host Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Saturday in the Section semi finals.
Adrian took the opening kickoff and marched 60 yards in 5 plays allowing Ryan Wieneke to score on a 2 yard run at the 10:02 mark of the 1st quarter. On the PAT run, Frank Serrao ran the ball in and Adrian led 8 to 0. A big play in the drive was a Frank Serrao 40 yard run.
Springfield used a trick play to score on their next possession, but it was called back due to a forward lateral. Adrian’s defense then woke up and forced them to punt. Adrian stalled and punted the ball back to the Tigers where they then fumbled on their 2nd play, giving Adrian great field position at the 25 yard line. Frank Serrao scored on a 4 yard run at the 4:25 mark of the 1st quarter. On the PAT run, Frank Serrao ran the ball in and Adrian led 16 to 0.
Springfield again went 3 plays and out and was forced to punt. Adrian took over on the 11 yard line after a 54 yard punt by Springfield. The Dragons took their time and used 12 plays to cover the 89 yards with Frank Serrao scoring from 2 yards out. The PAT was no good and Adrian led 22 to 0 at the 9:47 mark of the 2nd quarter. Big plays in the drive were a Frank Serrao run of 34 yards and 3 Nick Harder runs of 8 plus yards.
