Friends from the Class of 1979 had a fabulous time at Marcy (Stubbe) Remer’s cabin at Devil’s Lake, which is near Alexandria, MN. Those who enjoyed great food and wonderful memories were: Laura (Oertli) Nedved from Yankton; Joan Reisdorfer from Sioux Falls; Linda (Wick) Studer from Sioux Falls; Sharon (Taylor) Deutsch from Sioux Falls; and Jean Watry from Minneapolis. The gals try to make this an annual event!
There was a beautiful memorial service at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne on July 19, 2016. Pastor Tom Voight, chaplain of the home officiated, and there was uplifting music and scripture. Lee Oertli was one of the five Veterans that was honored. Lee’s roommate, Cliff Gilbertson, led the Pledge of Allegiance. Pastor Tom shared a few words about each Veteran and each Veteran’s family shared a few memories of their loved one. Pastor Tom thanked the families for loaning these five special men to the Minnesota Veteran’s Home, as they added so much life to the home. At the end of the service, each family was given a framed picture of their loved one and a flag. Attending for Lee Oertli were his wife, Coletta his two daughters, Jean Hamann and Sue Schreier; two of his granddaughters, Brylei and Isabela Schreier; Carol Rupp; Lee’s roommate, Cliff Gilbertson, and several other residents and staff of the Minnesota Veterans Home.
Just some comments and observations on the annual Catholic Daughters salad luncheon, which was held on Wednesday, July 20th (in 100 degree weather) at St. Adrian’s Church air-conditioned parlor. The luncheon, under the capable leadership of Sandy Suedkamp, was a big success. The ladies working, bringing salads and desserts did a “bang-up” job. The salads were huge and delicious and the desserts were put on small plates with a doily under each dessert. The dessert table was so lovely put together by Rita Domagala. The tables were beautiful, with fresh flowers from Kathy (Scot) Henning. The luncheon was attended by members of the four Adrian churches and folks came from many towns, plus folks from Texas, South Dakota, Iowa and parts of Minnesota. You know when something is a success when folks laugh, drink many cups of coffee and make new friends with those sitting at their table. Now folks you must remember that many of these same ladies donated pies at the “Christmas in July” food stand in the Fire Hall in Adrian on Saturday and many of them also worked. Now you know that I am positively prejudice about the people in Adrian, but these last few weeks, 99% came through to help, furnish food, work and smile and go to bed with a happy heart.
Pam Kramer has made and donated a beautiful quilt for St. Adrian’s Fall Bazaar. Be sure to take some chances when you see it displayed at various events. The lovely hand crocheted rose bud covering made by the late Margaret Suedkamp was donated by Vern and Sandy Suedkamp. Truly a work of art. Chances are being sold on that also.
Folks be sure to attend the Pancake Benefit for Josh Nolte who is suffering from brain cancer. It will be Sunday, July 31st in the Ellsworth Fire Hall starting at 9:00 a.m. Please help this young man, who had a nine hour brain surgery, pay some of his medical bills. We are a caring community and have always helped our friends in this wide area. Welcome to everyone.
For years a group of “young” golfers from the former Catholic school at St. Adrian and the Adrian Public School have arranged to meet and play golf for three days. They play at Luverne, Adrian and Worthington. This year the 24 men played July 18, 19, and 20th. Former Adrianite Mark Nealy arranges the fun event. They all have a great time and get caught up on news and family. They also enjoy eating at the three towns. Countryside Inn took care of them when they played at the Adrian’s beautiful golf course. They also ate at Luverne’s golf course and the golf course at Worthington. This writer will get the names of all the golfers and have them listed in next weeks Review.
Good to see Kay Bach and Joanne Wolf at the Subway for coffee last Tuesday. How about prayers for Carl Heitkamp, Virginia Knips and our own Geneva Kiefer. Frank Van Horsen is already settled in at the Minnesota Veterans Home.
On Sunday, July 24th a lovely 10:30 Mass was celebrated for the late Ben and Margaret Schraad family at St. Adrian. A very large crowd of family members came from many parts of the country to celebrate. The five Schraad children, Mary, Jane, Bill, Tom and Joe were all present for the different gatherings. Many grandchildren and great-grand children headed for Luverne and Adrian and all had a great time. The Mass was celebrated by an African Missionary who was very sincere and devoted. The Schraad family were all so delighted to see familiar faces greet them at the special Mass.
This writer says “shop in Adrian”! Your money will stay in Adrian. The business people will love to see you and you get great service.
Good to see Teresa Marie and Elwood Peterburs camping and visiting in the area. Also saw Don Lien, former Adrianite, now living in Arkansas.
