Last Thursday, May 18th, my good friend Colleen Bents and I drove to Pipestone to have lunch at the ‘famous’ Lange Cafe. We picked up Colleen’s mom, Rosie McGinty, who lives in her home in Holland, and her sister Diane, who lives in Pipestone. As the four of us went to Lange’s Cafe, we noticed a bit of excitement on the streets. The police were running all over! We learned that the famous NASCAR driver, Kyle Petty, and his crew were coming through Pipestone on their way to Minneapolis. This was the twenty third “Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America”, involving 200 motorcycles. They set out on a week long, 2,400 mile trek, to raise funds and awareness for ‘Victory Junction’, a camp for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. Their final destination was Milwaukee, WI. Kyle’s father, Richard, who usually rides on a bike, was in a car due to the terrible weather they’d been traveling through. As the Lange Cafe sits right on the highway, we had ring-side seats!!
After the excitement, we had a great lunch with dessert! Colleen chose Raisin Cream Pie in honor of her late husband, Duane. We all shared this pie with good thoughts. The Lange Cafe is known for their great service and 24/7 service hours. It was a great time and we agreed to meet next year.
I read an article in the Worthington Globe on 5/17/2017, “A Blast from the Past.” Mentioned was Vince Mulder playing with Ellsworth and bringing in the tying run! Also mentioned was Lloyd Voss from Magnolia, who was a football star at Nebraska. This was in the year 1957. Definitely a ‘blast from the past’!
The much needed rain really played havoc with all the graduation open house parties! They were all still held, and all survived!! Most of the parties were held in decorated garages. It was great to talk to people you hardly ever see. Some I met I wasn’t sure who they were until they mentioned something that I remembered, like Steve Loosbrock who loves bowling and bowled on the Adrian K.C. bowling team! It was great to see Andy Wagner and get a hug. The Wagner ‘kids’ were all helping, but they took time to visit. I loved the beautiful quilt Maddie Crabtree made for Alex. These young people have so much talent. It was good to visit with the former Elaine Klein, who had driven to Minnesota from the east coast to see her mom, Esther Klein, as well as other relatives.
The last sponsors of the Two Buck Meal at the Senior Dining Center were Jon and Peg Faber. Twenty five happy people enjoyed a hot turkey dinner with cake for dessert.
I can’t believe we have had to turn the heat up in our homes in the last week of May!! Thank the Lord I still have my electric blanket!
I want to thank my dear readers and friends for your willingness to pick me up or bring me home! You really don’t know how much I appreciate your offers!
Area churches will be starting Vacation Bible School soon. Be sure to sign your children or grandchildren up for these fun and learning days!
Things I noticed last week — the t-shirts and blinking lights around the Kevin and Nancy Lonneman garage; the black cattle grazing on lush green hills at the Wagner farm; Gary Henning wearing a white hat. He looked very nice; all the help offered at the Loosbrock party and the smiles from everyone even though they were shivering from the cold. Next week will be better!
Be sure to read the article in the Nobles County Review concerning the disposal of leftover corn! It caught my attention because Tom was a DeKalb dealer. Lots of good information.
Don’t forget about the Memorial Day events happening in many of the towns around us. We honor the veterans who have died for our freedom and remember our loved ones! God Bless America!!
