Were we ready for our first snow?  NO!  That did not deter people for turning out for the Sanford/Luverne Hospice Annual Tour of Tables held on Saturday, October 28th.  This year’s event was held at the Grand Prairie Event Center in downtown Luverne.  Twenty-nine tables were decorated by volunteers in a variety of themes.  The table I sat at was decorated for Christmas by George Bonnema (formerly of Luverne Flowers).  He used fresh greenery strung with popcorn and berries, with carolers from his collection set around among the greenery.  The dishes he used were borrowed from the Cottage and were from the Better Homes and Garden antique collection.  Around the table seated with Eileen Hokeness and myself were ladies from Lismore; Betty LeBrun, Joyce Erdman, Jeanette Lynn, Rita Lenz and Marge Wieneke.  Each table had a distinct theme, such as the Vikings Fan Table decorated by the Gorter family (this is their eleventh year).  the Green Bay Packers were also represented.  Jerseys were acting as chair covers.  Kathy Burzlaff and Cindy Heitkamp decorated a table using the theme “Golden Oldies”.  The girls used many things from the 50’s, including poodle skirts, an old typewriter, a sled for two, and old ice skates.  Lots of pictures were taken and new memories were made.  About 10:30 a.m. a brunch buffet was served by Bluestem Catering of Luverne.  It was delicious!  There were four tables of silent auction baskets, fifty-three in all, and the bidding was fast and furious.  All of the money raised at this event stays in Luverne and will be used for a new dining room set and lighting at the Cottage.  The committee is to be congratulated for another successful Tour of Tables!

Our deepest sympathies to Marlene Becker and her family in the tragic loss of husband, father, grandfather and friend, Royce Becker.  Royce and Marlene were married for sixty years.  They have three children and twelve grandchildren.  The visitation for Royce was held at Zion Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth this past Sunday.  Long lines of mourners waited to pay their respects to a good man.  The Funeral Service was held on Monday, October 30th, officiated by Pastor Paul Snyder, and good friend Father James Seitz.   He was buried at Grand Prairie Cemetery in Ellsworth, with full military honors.  Blessed be the memory of Royce Becker.
