Adrian Girls Win Important Section Matchup

Playing their final game before the South Section 3A Seeding came out, the Dragon girls needed a win over a Red Rock Conference rival with hopes of drawing a higher seed then their opponent. When the dust had settled the Dragons were able to battle themselves to a 51-42 win over the visiting Flying Dutchmen of Edgerton Public. The win pushes their overall record to 10-11, while advancing their Red Rock Conference mark to 9-5. More importantly, it gives the Dragons a 2-0 record over the Dutchmen this season.

Edgerton would score the games first points of the contest when they connected on a trey and followed with a pair of charity tosses to lead 5-0 after four minutes of play. A Mikayla Jeffers drive scored Adrian’s first points making it a 5-2 score at the 15:32 mark.

Stepping off the bench, Hannah Bullerman cashed in on a three-pointer and knotted the score at five apiece. One of two freethrows by Paige Bullerman gave the Dragons their first lead of the night, but Edgerton tallied the next four points to regain the lead before Miah Kunkel found nothing but net on a pair of freethrows to bring her team to within a point at 9-8.

The Dragons point guard; Moriah Bullerman gave Adrian their second lead of the night when she scored her first points of the night on a nice drive to the basket. The Dutchmen answered with their second trey of the game and with 6:34 to play in the opening period held a two point, 12-10, advantage. Moriah’s second consecutive fieldgoal tied it at 12 each and Hannah Bullerman’s two of two charity tosses gave the Dragons their third lead of the game.

It would be a lead they would maintain the rest of the game and when Jeffers swished a 19 footer, it gave the Dragons their largest lead of the first half 21-15. The Dutchmen were able to cut that lead to five points at the break by out scoring the host team 2-1 over the first half’s last 52 seconds.

A couple of offensive rebounds by Paige Bullerman lead to Adrian’s first points of the second half and when she turned her second one into a traditional three-point play the Dragon lead was up to eight points at 27-19. A Moriah Bullerman baseline runner made it a double-digit lead at 29-19. Adrian’s Miah Kunkel followed with a basket from the right block and gave Adrian a 12-point advantage at 31-19 with 14:25 to play in the final period.

The Dutchmen were able to close the gap to within eight points (39-29) at the 7:51, but Adrian responded with the games next four points to take their lead back to double-digits.  Edgerton was able to answer each fieldgoal by the host team, but could get no closer then nine points as the Dragons finished with the 51-42 win.
