Adrian Elementary receives grant from Dollar General

My name is Jolene Henning.  I’m the K-2 Title 1 Teacher at Adrian Elementary School.  Last spring, I applied for a Dollar General Literacy Grant.  It was titled, “Decoding Detectives”.  The purpose for applying for the grant was to help purchase HD Word Kits and online lesson tools from the Really Great Reading Company to aid us in helping students decode words more efficiently and effectively.

After looking at spring data, the evidence was clear that we needed to do more decoding work with students.  The HD Word kits allow teachers and students to work together to listen for phonemes (sounds) in words and then build words with the magnetic letters, write and read words.  In addition, there are tools in the kits to help students break apart syllables so they are able to read and write multi-syllable words.   There are also online pieces that we purchased to help with decoding practice.

The kits have arrived and are being used in the K-3 classrooms and in the Title 1 rooms.  The students enjoy using the kits since they are hands on and are easily manipulated.   We have already seen students become better word detectives while they are reading and writing.

In addition to the Literacy grant that we received from Dollar General, we were also given a donation from the Adrian PTO to purchase additional HD Word kits.

Adrian Elementary thanks both Dollar General and the Adrian PTO for their generous donations to our school to help with our student’s learning.
