By Lisa Kruger, Review Staff Writer & Blake Madison, Adrian Boy Scouts Troop #32
The Adrian American Legion Argonne Post #32 held their monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 11th. The Adrian Boy Scouts Troop #32 was invited to the meeting to present information about their upcoming trip they are raising funds for. Blake Madison spoke about the troops experiences and how they impact the area communities. Blake has been a member of the Scouts for 9 years (since first grade). He is the Chaplain for Troop 32, ranked as a Life Scout, a member of Order of the Arrow and is currently working toward the Eagle Scout rank.
The American Legion in Adrian is the charter organization for Adrian’s troop, which has scouts from both Adrian and Luverne. The troop currently has five scouts. Madison stated, “We hope to continue to grow and maintain a great legacy of scouting in the community.”
The troop prides themselves as being “hardcore outdoor enthusiasts.” They attend camp every summer at Lewis and Clark BSA and also winter camp. They had an opportunity to camp with the South Dakota National Guard where they learned many useful skills and had the chance to try out night vision goggles and ride in tanks. They have done a High Adventure river trip down the Missouri River; carrying all of their food and water and camped on islands. They spent a weekend camping in Custer State Park where they mountain biked 26 miles and earned their cycling badges. Over Christmas break last month, they butchered a hog and roasted it whole on a cabin-camping trip.
Every year the troop goes above their required service hours. Their traditional yearly projects include: volunteering at the Luverne Veterans Home, cleaning the Rock County Veterans Memorial, making care packages for service members and sick kids in their communities, servicing defibrillators, helping with the annual ice fishing tournament in Luverne, participating and organizing flag retirement ceremonies, helping at the Rock County Veterans Day banquet, and mentoring their area Cub Scout Troop. Their Assistant Scout Master, Rob Wenzel, also participated in Worthington’s Deep Freeze Dip.
