The Worthington Area Trap Team just won their seventh consecutive conference title, an impressive accomplishment since this is only their seventh year as an organized high school team. Yep, that is right, they have won the conference title every year since they began. And this is no small conference, it includes more than 1,000 shooters!
The Minnesota State High School Clay Target League was started in 2001 in Plymouth, Minnesota. It was a slow start for these early shooters with only around 30 students participating by 2008. When Worthington Area joined the league in 2009 it was beginning to see a surge in popularity as gun clubs and High Schools began to hear about and learn more about the league. Fast forward to 2016 and trap shooting has become the fastest growing sport in Minnesota with more than 200 high school teams with around 10,000 student participants taking part in the 2016 Trap Shooting Championship in Alexandria June 14-21. With their first place team finish the Worthington Area team was whittled down from 25 to the top five shooters and two alternates who went head to head against 38 teams from across the state at the Minnesota State High School League’s State Tournament that took place June 25th at the Minneapolis Gun Club. Worthington Area came home with second place at the MSHSL State Tournament with a score of 471, just one target better than the third place team.
