February is National Children’s Dental Health Month.  It is an observance that brings together thousands of dedicated dental professionals, healthcare providers and educators to promote the benefits of good oral health for children and their caregivers, teachers and others.

Dr. Michelle Skaff at Adrian Family Dental is enthusiastic about children’s dental health.  “Kids’ dental care is important and their parents play a big role in establishing a routine.  Kids should start to brush their teeth as soon as they get them,” she said.  “When they can tie their own shoes, that is a good time to start them brushing on their own.  Play a favorite song and brush throughout the whole song.  Two minutes seems like a long time when you’re brushing, but it is a good way to ensure your teeth are thoroughly cleansed.  Flossing is also an important part of dental care for children and their parents as well.”

Michelle discussed dental visits for families.  She stated that a child’s first dental visit should take place no later than their first birthday.  No one should ever feel shame if it’s been years, or if they have never gone to the dentist. She said it is never too late to begin a dental routine.  Adrian Family Dental does see all ages of people-no one is too young or too old.  “We have the use of laughing gas that makes it easier for younger children to relax.  I want a child’s experience, or anyone’s, to be a good one.”

On February 25 and 26, Michelle will visit the Adrian Elementary School to check in with preschoolers, kindergartners and first graders.  “The kids will get to meet our dragon and see us in our masks and gloves.  We will talk about the importance of brushing their teeth and the importance of regular dental check-ups.  I will demonstrate the proper way to brush.”  Michelle feels it is so important to visit them at school.  “They will know and remember us.  It makes it easier for all of us,” she said.  “Each child will get a new toothbrush and toothpaste to take home.  If your child is not brushing and flossing, it is time to start.  There will be no judgement from anyone at our office.”

Be sure to get a dental appointment scheduled for your children.  “I would like to see kids stay here in Adrian,” Michelle finished.  “ It is easier to stay in one place for your dental care, than having to visit several offices. Adrian Family Dental is for the whole family.”
