On September 24, the Adrian Senior Dining Center held an open house to formally show off the new dining facility. Approximately 29 people came for dinner, with about another 10 to 15 who stopped in just to visit. Besides the taco salad meal, the people had a chance to visit with eight different agencies from the area whose purpose is to provide services to seniors.
The MN River Area Agency on Aging, was the chief agency attending the open house. Quite a few of the other agencies present work under MNRAAA. MNRAAA is presently working on a $10,000 grant for Adrian to complete an age-friendly project(s) that has yet to be decided upon. This agency helps towns take steps to becoming a good place to live, no matter what age you are.
The AHS Student Council had members present to help anyone set up and navigate Facebook. The Elementary School also had a representative present to encourage people to sign up as volunteer readers.
UCAP (United Community Action Partnership) was present to make people aware of Community Transit and also hoping to interest individuals in becoming a volunteer driver. This service is a public transit service. Volunteers provide rides to destinations outside the primary service area. At the present time they are not active in Nobles County, because there are no volunteers to drive. This is something they are hoping to change.
SMOC had representatives present to talk about their “Live Well at Home” program. A SMOC home inspector will come to your home and assess it to determine what changes or modifications could be made to help you remain in your home for a longer period of time. They also had applications for energy programs available for the 2019-2020 heating season, along with other information on additional programs.
A.C.E. (advocate-connect-educate) of SWMN, formerly RSVP, had information on a new program “Matter of Balance”. This is a eight week program, beginning on October 28th, offered here in Adrian at the Senior Dining Center. The program is designed to help build practical strategies to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels. The program will run from 1:00-3:00 p.m. and is open to anyone. You must register for the classes by calling Joanne Bartosh at 507-295-5262.
Chris Wolf and Roger Graff were present to explain the upcoming school referendum and answer any questions.
The Sanford Adrian Clinic offered flu shots throughout the afternoon to eligible seniors.
Senior Life Linkage had materials available to explain how and what their services are for. They have access to all types of services for seniors statewide.
The Senior Dining program is for anyone. It is a convenient, newly remodeled place to go and get a nutritious meal at a reasonable price, and spend time with others from within the community. If you haven’t tried the Senior Dining Center for dinner, make plans to do so. All you need to do is contact Marie at the center, 483-2588 or at home 483-2741 to make your reservation.
