Carl King ~ Rushmore, MN

 

 

Funeral Services for Carl King, age 94, of Rushmore, MN were held Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at the Dingmann Funeral Home, in Worthington, MN officiated by Pastor Paul Snyder. Burial was at the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Rushmore, MN.  Carl died Saturday, August 17, 2019, at the Sanford Worthington Medical Center. He was born July 30, 1925 near Decatur, MI to George Sr. and Kassiena (Vander Werff) King. When Carl was less than one year old, the family moved back to Minnesota and lived in the Rushmore – Worthington areas, where he attended various country schools until completing the eighth grade. He did farm work and worked at Morrell’s, in Sioux Falls, SD before entering the Armed Services in 1950, during the Korean conflict, and also spent six months in Japan with the 45th Thunderbird Infantry with the National Guard from Oklahoma. He was a driver in the motor pool, and was discharged in September of 1952. In the summer of 1953, he worked with the railroad crew.

Carl was united in marriage to Lucille Frey on December 31, 1953, at the Parsonage of First Presbyterian Church, in Rushmore, by Reverend Newton Roberts. In January of 1954, the couple moved to Fontana, CA, where they lived for three months. When they returned to Minnesota, they lived in Worthington where he was employed by Gerrit Greven Block & Tile Co. for two years. Carl then farmed his family’s farm south of Reading for three years. In March of 1959, they moved into Rushmore where he worked for Elmer Brunk for a couple of months before becoming employed at Farmers Grain & Supply Co. (later renamed Farmer United Co-op) where he worked for twenty nine years, then retiring in May of 1988.

Carl enjoyed going fishing, playing pool and working around the house and yard. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served on the board of trustees and the deacons. In 1991, Carl and Lucille became custodians of the church and served as custodians for twenty four and a half years. He was a member of the Rushmore American Legion and later of the Worthington Post. Carl was also a member of the Rushmore Fire Dept. for several years. In 1998, he was elected as a member to the Board of Directors of the Rushmore Cemetery Association until the end of 2009. Carl joined the Rushmore Senior Citizen Club in January of 2011.

Carl is survived by his wife, Lucille King, Rushmore, MN;  his four sons, Dennis King, Rushmore, MN; Randy (Michelle) King, Fulda, MN; Wendell (Pat) King, Kimball, MN; and Curtis (Emily) King, Colorado Springs, CO; four grandchildren, Angie King, Josh (Audra) De Yong, Lisa King and Jason (Shawna) King; a step grandson, Josh Kindel; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Percy King, Bloomington, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two great-grandchildren; four brothers; and six sisters.
