Board Chair Lenz called the regular meeting of the Adrian Board of Education to order at 6:00 P.M. on June 17, 2019. Members present: Bullerman, Kruger, Kunkel, Lenz and Madison. Also present were Superintendent Graff, Principals Koehne and Lofthus, staff members Kim Vander Lugt and Mike Cook, and Daily Globe Representative Alyssa Sobotka.
Board Members Wieneke and Wolf were absent.
Motion by Kunkel, seconded by Kruger to add items J – Memorandum of Agreement – Superintendent’s Contract, to the Superintendent’s Report and to approve the agenda, motion carried.
Mike Cook presented the building and grounds report.
Transferred the remaining heating fuel from the Elementary tanks to the High School tanks.
Advanced Health & Safety is doing some additional testing for mold in the preschool room.
Looking at getting the outside doors repainted that had the paint flake off during the extreme cold weather in January.
Explained that a second expansion tank on the hot/cold air exchanger needs to be replaced. Motion by Kunkel, seconded by Bullerman to replace the second expansion tank, motion carried.
Motion by Kruger, seconded by Madison to approve the minutes from the May 20, 2019 meeting with corrections noted, motion carried.
Motion by Kruger, seconded by Kunkel to approve the minutes from the Special meeting held on June 10, 2019, motion carried.
Motion by Madison, seconded by Kunkel to approve the claims and accounts for May 2019, motion carried.
The May 31, 2019 reports were reviewed. Motion by Kruger, seconded by Madison to approve the account balances for May, motion carried.
Board Member Wieneke arrived at 6:16 PM.
Mrs. Koehne and Mr. Lofthus presented the Elementary and MS/HS Principal’s report
Mr. Lofthus requested to replace carpet in classroom 109 and 207. He has one quote and would like to seek additional quotes.
Mr. Lofthus requested to purchase 4 horseshoe shape tables for Kindergarten, Preschool and Title I classrooms at $325 each. Motion by Kunkel, seconded by Madison to approve purchase, motion carried.
Mr. Lofthus announced that the District was awarded the Pathway II scholarships for the preschool program for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 school years.
Mrs. Koehne asked if the Board would like to review the Flexible Learning Plan or table until the July meeting. It was agreed to table until all members were present.
Mrs. Koehne presented quotes for the exterior signage for the High School building. Following discussion it was decided to table this until the July meeting also.
Mrs. Koehne explained an activity conflict for Monday, September 16 and Homecoming Coronation and therefore requested to host Coronation on Sunday September 15. Motion by Kunkel, seconded by Kruger to approve request motion carried.
Mr. Graff presented his Superintendent’s report:
Presented the Environmental Health and Safety Program Proposal from Advanced Health, Safety and Security for 3 years at $3,760 per-year. Motion by Madison, seconded by Kruger to approve agreement, motion carried.
Presented Resolution Accepting Donations from American Legion Argonne Post 32 in the amount of $200 for the class of 2019 scholarship. Kruger moved its adoption with Kunkel seconding the motion, motion carried.
Presented a request to extend the Transportation Agreement with Adrian Bus Company for an additional two years. Motion by Kunkel, seconded by Madison to extend agreement, motion carried.
Presented the budget for 2019-2020. Motion by Bullerman, seconded by Kunkel to accept the 2019-20 Budget, motion carried.
Presented the “At Will Employee” agreements for 2019-2020. Motion by Bullerman, seconded by Kruger to accept agreements, motion carried.
Reviewed, discussed and recommended changes to the Proposed Ballot questions.
Presented two insurance quotes for the District’s insurance. EMC quoted at $70,899.44, Continental Western at $77,905.27. Motion by Wieneke, seconded by Kunkel to accept the quote with an $1,000 deductible with EMC Insurance provided the Work Comp Insurance Coverage is accurate for our number of employees and does not exceed the quote provided by Continental Western Group, motion carried. Renee Bullerman will contact EMC to make sure the work comp coverage is accurate.
Reviewed and discussed the High School Gym Painting bids. Requested to table this until next year as it is not in the current budget to fund this project.
Presented the Miscellaneous Contractor Bids for the Elementary Boiler Project.
Abatement/Demolition of Boilers – bid awarded to Sheltertech at $19,240.00
Construction Testing – bid awarded to American Engineering & Testing at $2,972.50
Vinyl Fencing Around Tanks – bid awarded to Michaels Fencing at $6,457.00
Excavation/Removal of Tanks – bid awarded to Reker Construction at $14,000.00
Motion by Madison to approve all four bids, seconded by Kruger, motion carried.
Mr. Graff presented a Memorandum of Agreement to the Superintendent’s Contract. The memorandum is to restore full family coverage health insurance for the superintendent. Motion by Kunkel, seconded by Madison, upon roll call vote: Bullerman – No, Kruger – Yes, Kunkel – Yes, Lenz – Yes, Madison – Yes, Wieneke – Yes. Motion carried 5-1.
Motion by Bullerman, seconded by Kruger to adjourn the June meeting of the Adrian Board of Education at 7:23 P.M., motion carried.
