If you want a surprise party call the Hennings and they will help you! On November 24, Arlene and “Hap” Henning went to the American Legion for a surprise party for Charlie Henning who was turning fifty. As they entered the Legion at 4:00 p.m., a large crowd that was already there shouted “Surprise”. They were shouting “surprise” because “Hap” was celebrating his 90th birthday! Many Hennings were present even those who came for the party and went back the same night. Lonnie’s son Zach led the young people in singing happy birthday several times. The food was excellent and as always there was plenty. Even though they were celebrating “Hap’s” birthday, he still remembered a card for Charlie. Everyone present had a great time. It was a big surprise to “Hap” even though Sandy Henning was one of the organizers. Happy birthday “Hap” and may you have many more!
Main Street Financial invited clients to their 2017 Christmas celebration. It was held on December 5 at the Palace Theater in Luverne. Two performances by the “Hegg Brothers” were available to attend, one at 2:00 p.m. and a second at 7:00 p.m. It was a great show. Among the clients attending were Ruth Bauer and Kay Cox.
On December 1, The History Center in Luverne held a ribbon cutting ceremony and an open house at it’s newly renovated facility in the old Herman Motor building. They did a beautiful job renovating. This is the new home for Betty Mann’s 2800 or more nutcrackers that she has donated to the Historical Society. Luverne is again this year using the theme “A Nutcracker Christmas” as their theme for the Christmas season.
Last week, omitted from the paper was the term “Ugly Christmas Sweater” to be worn at the Catholic Daughters potluck supper on December 14 at 6:00 p.m. If you don’t have an ugly sweater, wear an old Christmas sweater. Be sure to come!
Congratulations to Connie Lonneman, who was named as a 2017 Outstanding Woman in Banking. Connie and her husband Jerry farm three miles south of Adrian. Connie is employed at First Bank Southwest in Worthington. Greg Raymo, CEO and president of the bank stated the many great qualifications of Connie and why she was chosen for this great honor. Connie is the daughter of Jean and the late Bob Knips of Luverne. We are proud to have Connie and Jerry Lonneman as residents of Adrian.
The funeral for Sue Buffington of Luverne was held on December 5. She was a member of St. Adrian Catholic Daughters. More about her next week.
Good to see Cindy Wolf’s picture in the Globe. Cindy worked very hard to get the grants for the defibrillators in the churches in the Adrian area. Many folks are now trained to use these life saving devices.
Worthington’s High School Band will be shown marching in the Thanksgiving Day Parade in California on the Hallmark Channel on December 15. Band director Jon Loy was once the Adrian Band director. Congratulations to the WHS Band for the many honors they have received!
It’s always good to read about former Adrian residents who are making a mark elsewhere. One such person is Sheila Grimmius, daughter of Barb and Lorie Bullerman.
On Sunday night I spent two hours doubled over with laughter while watching the 50th anniversary of the Carol Burnett Show. I hope I didn’t disturb the neighbors. The most requested episode was when Carol Burnett portrayed Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind, and made an entrance down the grand staircase wearing green velvet curtains, complete with the rod. It was a delightful two hours!
On last weeks episode of 60 Minutes, they did a story on Washington DC Chef Jose Andre who has provided warm meals for over 3 million people in Puerto Rico. He is really good in getting people to volunteer and go to where the need is the greatest. He encourages people to step up and use skills they didn’t know they have. It was a powerful story.
