Dawson Boyd spoils Dragon football opener

The Dawson Boyd Blackjacks football team proved to be too much for the Adrian Dragons to handle last Thursday night in Adrian.  The Blackjacks scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to hand Adrian the loss by a score of 46-14.

The Dragons won the opening toss and elected to receive.  The opening kickoff was mishandled by the Dragon returner which resulted in a return of only two yards.  The first series was just as forgettable for Adrian as they went three and out.

After the Dragon punt, DB had the ball on Adrian´s 46 yard line.  The Blackjacks were able to move the ball down the field to the 14 yard line on three plays.  The Dragon defense then stiffened up, forcing two negative plays followed by an offensive holding call.  However, Blackjacks were able to convert fourth and 19 from the 23 yard line for a touchdown.  DB botched the snap on the extra point, forcing the holder to try and pass for two.  Trace Kremin picked the ball off in the endzone to keep the score 6-0.

The Dragons would answer quickly with a seven play, 64 yard drive for a touchdown.  The touchdown came on a one yard quarterback sneak from Ryan Wieneke.  Wieneke had a 45 yard run on the drive as well.  Dakota John set the touchdown up with a nine yard run to the one yard line. Dominiq Canales added the extra point to give the Dragons a 7-6 lead.

DB would score again on their next possession.  The drive featured eight runs for 44 yards and was capped with a 32 yard passing touchdown on a screen pass.  The two point try was no good.  Leaving the the score 12-7 DB.

The next Adrian possession resulted in a punt after three plays.  DB would then go in to score another touchdown.  DB converted two third downs and one fourth down before scoring on a six yard run.  The two point conversion was good, making the score DB 20 Adrian 7 with 4:09 left to play in the first half.

The Dragons would strike quickly on the next possession. Brandon Schnoor was able to convert a third down with a 12 yard run.  The next third down was converted for a touchdown as Wieneke found Ian Stamer down the right sideline for a 58 yard touchdown.  Canales converted the extra point to make the score 20-14 DB with 1:30 left to play in the half.

The Blackjacks, left with little time would come out throwing.  The Dragon defense was unable to get a stop.  DB completed passes of 31, 13, and 15 yards with the 15 yarder going for a score with just 10 seconds left in the half.  The two point try failed, making the score 26-14 DB going into half.

The Blackjacks received the second half kickoff.  DB returned said kickoff all the way down to the Adrian 35 yard line.  The Dragons gave up one first down before Braxton Vortherms and Skylar Dingmann forced a fumble that was recovered by Wieneke to stop the drive.

The Dragons were unable to capitalize, punting after three plays.  Adrian would force a DB punt after three plays to get the ball right back.  The Dragons would move the ball with two first downs before two holding calls forced a punt.  DB returned the punt 10 yards to start their next drive on the Adrian 35 yard line.  The Dragon defense held their own, forcing DB to turn the ball over on downs on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Adrian was unable to get anything going on their next offensive possession, forcing a punt.  This punt was returned 52 yards down the left sideline for the first score of the second half.  The two point conversion was good making the score, DB 34 Adrian 14.

The Blackjacks forced a turnover (fumble) on the next offensive play of the Dragons.  They then wasted no time scoring with a 41 yard touchdown run on the very next play.  The two point conversion failed and the score was 40-14.

Adrian was forced to punt on their next possession.  The Blackjacks would fumble on their next offensive play.  Axel Martinez made the recovery to give the Dragons the ball back.     Adrian would commit two penalties in the next series before confusion on a punt, forced a Dragon fumble and turnover.  DB would find the endzone on their next series in nine plays. The two point try failed, leaving the score, DB 46 Adrian 14 with 1:10 left to play in the game.  The Dragons would then run out the clock with one run to end the game.

Offensively, Adrian was led by Wieneke who complete 2-7 passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. Wieneke also rushed four times for 60 yards and a touchdown.  Schnoor carried eight times for 33 yards.  Landon Rogers had five yards on four attempts.  Nick Harder netted four yards on two carries.  Kremin rushed twice for two yards.  Dakota John accounted for 13 yards on three carries. Beau Bullerman attempted three times for three yards. Canales totaled 11 yards on two attempts.  Stamer had one catch for 54 yards and a score.  Rogers also caught a pass in the game to round out the offense.

Defensively, the Dragons were led by Lance Luettel who had 15 tackles.  Rogers contributed with thirteen of his own.  Devin Froderman and Harder each took down the ball carrier eight times.  Schnoor had six tackles while Scott Edwards and Skylar Dingmann each had five. Wieneke and Martinez both ended the game with four tackles.  Brady Vortherms, Logan Taylor, John, Brendyn White, Canales and Skylar Polzine all had three tackles.   Stamer, Corbin Burcham, Braxton Vortherms, and Bryce Wilson were credited with two a piece. Logan Scheer, Tucker Wieneke, and Levi Matthews rounded out the defense with one tackle.

The Dragons (0-1) will look to get their first win of the season this Friday night in Tracy.
