Readers, as I write this column on a cold, rainy, miserable Sunday evening, my thoughts turn to July!! By then it will be hot and we will be wishing for cool weather! Aren’t we fickle?
I read the Luverne “Alumni News.” The last issue, published April 17th, caught me by surprise. The publication covers news about graduates from the early 1920s to 2017. Some stories are just a couple of lines and others much longer. As I glanced over the comments, I ran across a story by Rebecca (Smook) Nistler, class of 2000, who wrote from her hometown of Milton, Georgia.
She wrote: “On the afternoon of Thursday, Jan. 26, I was sitting at my computer vigorously catching up on some work from home, when my husband, Noel, walked in and said “here’s your mail, Rebecca.” He sat it next to me. After about 30 minutes, I paused to stretch and look through my mail. I began to flip through the “Alumni News” and my eye caught a letter on page 3, written by Mrs. Kay (Doyle) Cox. I don’t know this woman, however, my eyes swelled with tears when I read this sentence- “Tom died in 1993 and I still miss him very much.” I do not think it could get any more powerful than that. I jumped up from my computer, eyes filled with tears, and rushed outside to find Noel and tell him I loved him and appreciated him. In this day and age, several of us find it routine to invest all of our time in the things that mean the most to us. Mrs. Cox may never know the impact she had on me that day, but I want to thank her by paying it forward, and I’m asking each of my classmates to help me do this.” I was very surprised and humbled to know something I wrote had such an impact on someone else. It’s a nice feeling!
It’s good to see our area students doing so well, graduating from various colleges. Carly Jo Wolf and Jenny Slater are graduating from Mankato State University, both with high honors! Congratulations!
You might know it would be windy and rainy on First Communion Sunday in the four parish churches! Congratulations to these great young boys and girls!!
Our sympathy to the family and the D.A.C. family of Janice Polzine (age 51), whose funeral was Saturday, April 30th in Wilmont. Janice was a hard worker at D.A.C. in Worthington. She will be missed by her family and her friends at D.A.C. Blessed be the memory of Janice Polzine!
Wasn’t it great to see the improvements to the Adrian Baseball Diamond? Joe Kruger, AHS baseball coach, was lavish with praise of the many who worked so hard to get the work done and ready to go on a Saturday morning. Many hands make the job easier. Now Adrian has a great mound that will last years!
Thanks to the many who mentioned the Mormann triplets story of last week. I was a bridesmaid at Al and Lela’s Mormann’s wedding. Also born that November in 1957 was Mary (Cox) Taylor. Mary was baptized at St. Adrian, the same day as the triplets, by Father Glenn. I asked Father Glenn where he wanted us to sit and he replied “over there in the corner, because I have the triplets and there will be a newspaper covering us — so I’ll get to you later.” We have had many laughs about that incident through the years – a good sixty years ago.
There are other sets of triplets in our area who are worth mentioning- the Kerns, the Kleins, and the Hebigs!
Our sympathy to Pat Henning and family on the death of husband, father and grandfather “Sonny” Henning, whose funeral was May 2nd. More next week.
Dave and Marlene Hieronimus, their children and grandchildren all left on Good Friday for their annual family trip to Orlando, Florida. Easter Sunday services were attended at Mary Queen of the Universe Church, with dinner to follow at one of the family’s favorite dining spots, “Wolfgang Puck’s.” The family spent much of their time by the pool, at Disney Springs, Epcot Center, Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom. Even Dave did a ride or two with his little buddy, Marik. The family trip is something that everyone looks forward to each year.
Thanks to Curt Hendel for his story in the April 26th edition of the Nobles County Review. You do a great job Curt!
Please pray for the many ill and disabled folks in our area. Prayers are powerful!
