Veterans Day, November 11, 2016 was a day of reverence, pride, patriotism and tears for many who attended the program at the Adrian High School. The large gym was filled with students from the Elementary through High School. The Adrian High School band provided music, along with 4th grade singing the Star Spangled Banner and the High School choir.
A touching ceremony of the Marines swearing in of Khailee Nelson daughter of Ed and Marlys Nelson and Kim Hannan was also held. A fully dressed officer from South Dakota did the honors. The large gym was completely silent during the ceremony and then a loud applause followed. Another fully dressed Marine was there, it was Khailee’s brother Tristan Nelson who stood at attention while she was sworn in. The student body was so respectful, so attentive and so involved. We should all be so pleased with all our students and faculty.
Many students took part in the program, and I understand did most of the planning.
Adrian Legion Post #32 was there to present the colors and retire colors after the program. I wish more of the public could have shared that special hour to honor our Veterans.
The 39th Annual Nobles County Council Veterans Day Dinner was held that evening, November 11th at Adrian’s beautiful Post #32. Six posts from Nobles County were present for a great dinner, catered by Adrian’s Countryside Inn. There was a social hour first then the dinner and a short program. All units and Veterans from many wars were recognized.
Auxiliary unit President, Diane Strassburg, Magnolia, was overall chairman for the evening. She was everywhere, greeting, instructing, ushering, helping with the program and doing more than her position calls for. The Adrian Boy Scouts had invited the Legion and Auxiliary family members to a great soup and dessert earlier on November 7th and did a “bang up” job. Diane was adamant about giving thanks to the Scouts for their great work and attitude. They are our future! Thank you Legion families for all your compassion and kindness to everyone. A special table was completely set up for the Veterans missing in action. They are always included in every Veterans Day celebration. Hope to see more community members next year.
James Jeffery, husband of Jessie (Kunkel) has completed his studies and graduated from Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA with his Master of Science in Nursing, passed his boards and is now a Family Practice Nurse Practitioner. He is employed with the Orthopedic Clinic in Spearfish, SD. Congratulations James on a job well done, all the while working full time at the Queens Clinic in Spearfish and all that goes with raising a family. Proud of you James.
The two brothers and six nephews of the late James Boecker of Adrian were so appreciative of the folks from St. Adrian and the community of Adrian who they met at Jim’s funeral on Saturday, November 12th. When asked who they were, they would grin and say “I’m #2 or #3.” They were a very friendly family from the Twin Cities area. The gals from the kitchen had plenty of help and the left over food was given to many different folks at the request of the nephews and nieces. Father Beerman gave a lovely homily along with the Mass. It was a good day for the Boecker family.
Our deep sympathy to Lorang family in the loss of Marvin. A very great, but humble man. He will be deeply missed by everyone.
This writer (K.C.) spoke to Kathy Burzlaff Sunday evening. She is doing great and her family is in charge of her therapy at home. Her “kids” and Bill are taking good care of her. Hi Kathy, from Kay and your office gals.
Isn’t God great? The First Presbyterian Church in Lismore had a huge crowd for their annual soup and dessert luncheon last Sunday. The three soups were all homemade, hot and delicious! The desserts were super and they even served ice cream if you wanted some on your dessert. The service is always so good. Thanks, Presbyterian Church! If I’m not dead, I’ll see you next year. K.C.
Hope everyone saw the beautiful moon Sunday evening. And there I sat with no boyfriend.
