Word was received last week of the sudden death of Jon Ross of Hutchinson, Minnesota. Jon was the husband of Patricia (Pat) Klein Ross, the oldest daughter of the late Jim and Rose Klein of rural Adrian. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 31st in Hutchinson.
This writer was watching Channel 13 FSFY last week and saw a segment on the Minnesota State Fair. Naturally I perked up my eyes and ears! It showed the Sioux Falls News couple holding a turkey leg and a pail of “Sweet Martha’s Chocolate Chip Cookies”! Sweet Martha is Martha Olson of St. Paul. Her mother is Rosemary (Vandera) Rossi, who was born in the home at 421 Nevada, now owned by Jim Reese. The Cox’s and Vandera’s have been friends since before 1950 and have received lots of cookies at the State Fair. Subway Manager, Karla Lenz let this writer bring the little pail of cookies to the “coffee crowd.” That was as long as Karla got one! Martha Olson has become a world wide celebrity for her cookies. She has a permanent stand and also a stand on wheels. She can make thousands of cookies in eight minutes. Her husband and two children also work the State Fair. It is a thriving and delicious operation.
Last week Jo Ann Klein stopped in Adrian to visit a few relatives on her way home to Conrad, Iowa. Jo Ann is the wife of the late Bob Klein, a former Adrian resident. Jo Ann was a visitor at Parker, SD, where she grew up. Her former church, Grace Lutheran was celebrating its 136th anniversary and Jo Ann helped make potato salad. Yes, the church used over 125 pounds of potatoes and 25 lbs. of chopped onions! The crowds were huge for this little town. Jo Ann took time to stop at the Watry home, Al Cox’s office, and Kay Cox’s home and tried to call several of Bob’s good friends. It’s always good to be remembered.
We are all so sad to hear about the death of dear Gert Berning. Her funeral will be August 31st in St. Adrian.
Congratulations to Marlene and “Boysie” Bullerman on their 60th wedding anniversary. What a great couple! Their six children, spouses and grandchildren took up many pews at the 10:30 Mass on Sunday, August 28th. Father Beerman gave them a special blessing and they received a long applause from the congregation. Their children are: Mike, Tom, Bob, Jayne, Randy and Lori. All children and grandchildren and great grandchildren were present at the beautiful Mass and then all attended dinner at the Countryside Inn. On a personal note, this writer and friend Vida did receive many hugs, smiles and kind words, as the Bullerman “kids” and their families had to pass our table on the way to the buffet line. What a great friendly family Marlene and “Boysie” have. Congratulations to this happy couple.
Thank God for all the gifts He has given us. Good weather, good friends, good Christian churches, good health and the ability to know right from wrong. Love one another as He loves us.
