On December 31, twenty Cox family members attended the Vikings game at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. They were thrilled to run into Tammi (Thier) and her husband Curt who traveled from Sioux Falls, SD to also see the game. Tammi and Amy (Cox) Hoemberg are members of the AHS Class of “78”. Of course all were thrilled that the Vikings won!
St. Adrian -only a few more dollars and the carpet fund will be met!
Mike Cox has retired from Main Street financial after twenty-eight years. On December 29, 2017 a retirement party was held for Mike at the Grand Prairie Events Center in Luverne. Despite the weather about two hundred friends and business associates gathered to honor Mike. Theresa Hup of Main Street Financial was the Master of Ceremonies along with the help of other coworkers. Blue Stem Catering provided the delicious steak meal. Thirty-five angel food cakes, made by Victoria Stevens, were centerpieces on the tables until it was time for dessert. The Blue Stem did an outstanding job of serving the guests!
The opening prayer was sung by George and Margaret Jorgenson, accompanied by Sue Skattum. Many people stood up to celebrate Mike with stories amid lots of laughter. Present in the assembly of friends were all of Mike’s siblings, Mark, Mary, Ann and Alan as well as myself and of course his wife Cheryl (Schutz). A couple of special people made the trip for Mike. D.J. Cross drove in from Branson, MO to pay his respect to his former coach. Lois Hamilton, who was born the same day in February, in the same hospital, and Tammi (Luettel) and her husband from New Ulm, MN also came for the evening.
Mike, along with his four siblings grew up on the family farm, where they all worked hard. At the age of seventeen, Mike suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on the left side. After many days in the hospital in Sioux Falls, and many hours of hard work, he slowly regained his strength and mobility. He graduated from Adrian High School, and attended Southwest University, where he graduated with a double major while working part-time at Schwanns.
Mike married his high school sweetheart in 1973 at St. Adrian Church. They became the parents of five children. God entrusted two handicapped children, Adam and Brian, to Cheryl and Mike, and they have done everything possible to ensure a secure future for the boys. Ben, their oldest son was in the service and traveled to countries around the globe, including Bosnia, South Korea and England. Their son John and his wife are doctors in Milwaukee, and Elissa, their only daughter, is a professor at Upper Iowa University. Her husband Andrew is V.P. of Academics at UIU.
Now that Mike is retired, he and Cheryl will continue to take more trips and spend more time with their six grandchildren. It is one of their favorite things to do! They also love to spend time with both the Schutz family and the Cox family. Mike still plans to volunteer at the Sanford/Luverne Hospice cottage, as well as continue to clean ditches outside of Luverne.
It has been a pleasure for me to write about my son. I am proud of you Mike! Happy retirement!
As I was doing devotions last Wednesday, I ran across this in the devotional I am using for 2018. I thought I’d share. This excerpt is taken from “The Confident Woman” by Joyce Meyers. What is confidence? I believe confidence is all about being positive concerning what you can do-and not worrying over what you can’t do. A confident person is open to learning, because they know that their confidence allows them to walk through life’s doorways, eager to discover what waits on the other side. They know that every new unknown is a chance to learn more about themselves and unleash their abilities. Confident people do not concentrate on their weaknesses; they develop and maximize their strengths. For example, on a scale of one to ten, you might be a three at one thing and an eight at something else. If you concentrate on the level three and work hard, you might reach a level five. But if you worked hard at level eight, you may achieve a ten! When you look at it this way, it’s easy to see where you need to invest your efforts. What are your strengths? If you don’t know, ask God to show you! DK
Keep thinking Spring!
